Implementation of the image preview widget

This post is the second series describing the use and implementation of the preview widget developed for the application of the section of the applications.Le image first post can be found here.

Today's posts covers general implementation widget as well as motion and animation implementation details.

Implementation of this widget is fairly straightforward from a perspective HTML, composed of a series of divs, with partners, JavaScript, and CSS perform most of the bulk of the work.

In this building, there are three main components:

September 30 — Topics: Developing with the webOS SDK, Plug-in Development Kit (PDK) — unwiredben

It feels like it was only five months ago that we published part 2 of this series.  Sorry for the long wait!

This time, we’re taking our BadFont sample and going in two directions.  First, we’ll add some TrueType font display code using the SDL_TTF library.  Second, we’ll talk about packaging up your PDK app for installing on the device and submitting it to the Palm webOS App Catalog.  As a bonus, we’ll also provide a makefile you can use on Windows for all of this.

Here’s what it will look like when we’re done:

All webOS devices ship with a set of TrueType fonts in /usr/share/fonts.  The main system font on webOS is called Prelude and we include these fonts:

Prelude-Bold.ttfPrelude-BoldOblique.ttfPrelude-Medium.ttfPrelude-MediumOblique.ttfPreludeCondensed-Bold.ttfPreludeCondensed-Medium.ttf

The Oblique forms are what you get when you italicize text.  The Condensed version is an alternate form that has thinner letters.

The SDL_TTF library is documented on the SDL Wiki site.  The key ideas here are that you load a font file into memory, then create a new graphics surface that is rendered as a string of text of a specified size.  You can then blit that surface to an SDL or OpenGL surface for display.  The bitmap surface produced by the TTF_RenderText_Blended call is created with the proper alpha channel information so it can be blitted on top of your existing surface without disturbing the background.

Here’s the code from our updated sample for opening and drawing with the Prelude Medium font; this isn’t all the code, just the new parts I added from part 2.  Be sure to free your text surfaces after use or you’ll leak memory.

To properly install your application to the device, you need to package it into an IPK file.  The tool to do this is called palm-package. To use this tool, you create an appinfo.json file and a package.properties file.  The first identifies key information about your PDK app to the system, while the second tells the packager how to properly set the executable bit on your ARM application so it can run when installed on the device.

To make sure that only the files I want are packaged, I usually have my build script make a STAGING directory, copy only the files I want packaged to that location, and then run palm-package on that folder instead of using the default folder.  Here’s the appinfo.json that we’re using for Bad Font:

When you write a JSON file like this, a good practice is to run it through the JSONLint.com website.  This will check your syntax and help you find simple errors like missing commas before the palm-package script complains.  For a PDK full-screen app, you want to make sure the app’s type is set to “pdk” and that you’ve got a requiredMemory field.  The number for that field is in megabytes, and the system uses that as a guide to know if it can launch your app without running out of memory, so try to be accurate.

There’s another file that’s just used by palm-package called package.properties.  This is used to tell palm-package what the file permissions are for files in your app. For JS/HTML apps, this doesn’t matter, as the standard properties are fine.  However, when you’ve got real executables, you need to mark them with the Unix executable flag. This file looks like:

filemode.755=badfont

Since this is so short, in our scripts and makefile, we just write that out as part of the packaging process instead of saving it in the filesystem.

Up to now, we’ve been using batch files on Windows to build our app.  This works OK for a single file application, but as your program grows larger, you may want a more sophisticated build tool.  The BadFont3.zip archive includes both a Makefile for use with Microsoft NMake and a GNUmakefile for use with GNU Make.  They do the same thing, but the syntax of the two tools differs slightly.  If you want to see some more examples of makefiles for building PDK projects, this thread on the developer forum has a bunch of examples.

And here’s the very similar makefile for GNU Make. There are a bunch of small differences. You have to call batch files like palm-package.bat by directly using CMD.EXE, since GNU Make doesn’t know how to search for .BAT files in the path. Path separators have to be changed from backslash to forward slash.  Conditionals have to be changed to remove the leading exclamation marks. Commands for rules have to have leading TAB characters instead of just leading spaces. Implicit rules that show how to turn .c or .cpp files into .o files have to be reworked.

I’ve attached the ZIP file for this sample code, including working makefiles as well as the old batch files as BadFont-Part3.zip. Be aware that this code won’t run as-is on a Palm Pixi device with webOS 1.4.5, as those don’t support SDL-only apps, but it should work fine on a Palm Pre.  If you’re on Mac OS X, you can use the GNUmakefile, but you’ll need to modify it a bit to handle the different shell commands and that palm-package is a shell script, not a batch file.

Amped Hack event summary

Last Saturday, the Palm team descended on Atlanta to help U.s. WebDirections hosting a hackathon incredible one day called Amped!. Amped goal is to form a team, code an application to respond to one of several challenges, prizes, and of course have a ton of fun; all in a single day.And it was a day! prize won and fun was had by all.

Palm team showed instead, courtesy first Georgia Tech, at 7 p.m. surrounding engineering school to set space .This GTRI Conference Center was primarily to gather tables and spaces of sofa for people to hack away, more than one tonne of outlets. 8 H 30 participants began to arrive, breakfasting on coffee free and pastries in the lobby.

Most of the participants were students, but there were several experienced as members. Some people has come as a team and other teams formed it.Many people have shown, but a team from the University of Tennessee leads two hours early morning competition!

Each sponsor Amped had their own challenges.Palm feels very strongly about the cross-platform development, so we issued the following challenge: create a mobile application that works on webOS and at least another platform .we have given Award for most useful, most creative, direct conversion and the grand prize including the winner gets to come to New York for the development in November day webOS.

Designed, hacked and encoded, sometimes take breaks to munchies and breakfast teams throughout the day. Organizers thought at all; the height of the day hot even had a truck ice appear to give us some refreshments.I have not had such a sandwich ice years yummy.

To help the teams really Polish their applications, many of the speakers WebDirections United came to give training sessions and mentor teams who wanted to help.WebDirections had an incredible number of great speakers with a variety of talents, so teams were not help missing.

By 7 pm, the teams had been coding for over 10 hours of straight lines .it ' is when the judges started tables on tour and to ask questions. We were all amazed by the quality of applications.décider on winners would be difficult!

At 8 pm we are all gathered in the hall of the main session have some refreshments, relax and be entertained by our host, do a little dance in the River. (We're not kidding!)

Finally, it was time to announce the courageous gagnants.Les came Palm challenge should not be disappointed:

Honorable Mention: they team created an incredible demo which you can play tennis on the network both a webOS and an Android phone with terrain on a screen of third parties, a desktop computer.Although not as polished as some other applications, we wanted to give a special mention for the technical challenges incredible overcame.

More creative: stars hack team created a completely new way to enjoy sports.There two mobile and TV component which allow you to bet in real time on what each team will do for each jeu.Vous can play against your friends and compete for the prize in teams.It looks like lots of fun and one of the few that integrate a traditional TV device.

Better conversion: Ninja of team consisted of students from Georgia Tech who use a tool called WP Dir to contact colleagues étudiants.Ninja team created web-based mobile so you can get this essential information application on the road.

Grand Prize: NiteOwl has created a solution to a problem they had experienced earlier in the semaine.Ils had taken part in a closed restaurant local.lorsque restaurant, they wanted to find other restaurants time closing as location-based and how many people is already là.À hackathon, they built this application only; and it is that an application! NiteOwl is very similar, takes advantage of several web technologies, including custom fonts and runs on almost every mobile device known to man .Regardez these photos:

The Palm Web Directions USA-Amped Web Hack Contest (“Contest”) is only open and offered to persons who are legal residents of the fifty (50) United States, the District of Columbia who are at least 18 years of age or older and attendee’s of the “Amped” Hack event at the Georgia Tech Research Institute scheduled on September 25, 2010 (“Event”).  Void where prohibited. 3.  CONTEST ENTRY: To participate in the Contest you must be registered for the Amped event  and submit a cross platform mobile web application for Palm webOS (“App”) during the Contest Entry Period.  Apps must be written during the Contest Entry Period by teams of no more than five (5) eligible Event attendees (“Members”) who may spend up to nine (9) hours writing the Apps. Entrants must be the copyright owners of the App submitted and Apps must be the original work of the Members; may not have won previous awards; may not have been published previously; must not infringe third-party rights, and must be suitable for publication (i.e., may not be obscene or indecent). All Apps and materials submitted become the property of the Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned.    Apps are judged in four (4) categories and winners are awarded prizes for best in class Apps at the end of the Event (“Entry”).  Limit one (1) entry per team.

4.  JUDGING: At the end of the Contest Entry Period, a panel of judges will review all eligible Entries to determine one winners for each of the following four (4) categories (“Categories”): Best Overall Application (Grand Prize); Most Useful Application (First Prize); Most Creative Idea/Approach (First Prize); and Best Application Converted to webOS (First Prize).  Selection of the winners will be based on the following judging criteria (“Judging Criteria”) for each Category: (a) 25% Approach, (b) 25% Teamwork, (c) 25% Level of Completion and (d) 25% Originality.  In the event of a tie, the tie will be broken based on the highest score in the “Approach” Judging Criteria, continuing thereafter to “Teamwork” and “Level of Completion” Judging Criteria, as needed to break the tie.  Winners will be announced at the Event on September 25th at 5:00 p.m.  Judges’ decisions are final and binding in all matters related to the Contest.

5.  PRIZES: Grand Prize (1): Each member of the Grand Prize team will receive a trip to attend DEV Day 2010 in New York City Scheduled on November 9th and 10th 2010.  Winner must be available to travel on dates specified by Sponsor, which are currently scheduled November 8-11, 2010 (but is subject to change).  Travel prize includes round-trip coach air transportation from major airport nearest winner’s home, single occupancy hotel accommodations for three (3) nights/ four (4) days, ground transportation to and from hotel to airport, one (1) event ticket to attend DEV Day. By submitting an App, each Entrant, warrants that (i) the App does not violate any law or regulation or any right of any third party, including those laws, regulations, and rights related to copyrights, trademarks, publicity, or privacy, (ii) the Entrant has followed the Rules and has the right to grant the rights to the App as provided in these Rules, and (iii) the App and/or Winner Content has not been published or submitted in any other competition.  Further, by submitting an App, the Entrant grants permission for Sponsor and Sponsor’s Affiliates to publish, post, display, and otherwise use the App in any form, in any manner, and in any media deemed appropriate by Sponsor or the Sponsor Affiliate, without compensation of any kind to Entrant.  Sponsor reserves the right to screen entries, but may post Apps to Sponsor’s website without editing or other prior review.

7.  LIABILITY LIMITATIONS: Sponsor may, at its sole discretion, disqualify any individual who tampers with any App or with the operation of the Contest, who acts in violation of these Rules or otherwise in a non-sportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or who displays any intent to threaten, abuse or harass any other person.  If, for any reason, the Contest is affected by any g, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, or other cause which, in the sole opinion of Sponsor, corrupts or otherwise affects the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this Contest, Sponsor may in its sole discretion cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Contest, and determine winners from Apps already received or as otherwise deemed fair and equitable by Sponsor.

8. A little neat webOS is the ability to distribute a scene from another application on top of your stack applications.Certains core applications that have this feature are people (which is a cross-launching application contacts), picker camera capture and video player.

My "I" has more than one "I": I'm an enthusiast, I am a believer in the mobile application, and I am an avid webOS user. Plasma Cannon enables each of these guys to smile. Rob Merrell has done a fantastic job designing a game that is quick to learn physics-based puzzle and offers multiple solutions to many of the challenges.The initial level uses the now-standard-in-AAA-titles-goal-I-wish-more-developers-would-clue-in tactics to act as a learning curve in jeu.La tutorial is sweet and includes biological, while bearing in mind always the user is a game and expects a fun experience.

A particularly fun level

The world of the game is simple, stable and cohérent.Chacun introduced elements, from the initial simple cannonballs through some of the more exotic as features gravity behaved switches, exactly as I had expected.Simple user interface and the mechanisms of the game remained my way giving me the granular level of control to resolve some of the most complex challenges with a single plan.Although it is possible for Damez pawn the yourself and destroy every chance of success in a challenge, you are always a simple gesture back far grid game reset.

I have a question stupid I-phone was not phone, iPod and Ipad counterparts.They are great, if you want that stuff without the téléphone.Ils have the ability to get on any network.I do not like the i - pod.

Is there something comparable worldwide "Droid"?Is there something that does not have the stupid "sync" and is not an ipod?

I like to play my MP3 and applications and watch my email and verification of facebook.Je do want just the iPod or you have to buy in a multi-hundred dollar phone plan.

When you first set up your webOS phone, you created something called a Palm profile. But what exactly is that and what does it do for you?

Simply put, it’s the key that unlocks the online aspects of your phone.

One of those beautiful webOS details that works quietly in the background to keep your phone one step ahead, your Palm profile consists of an email address and a password, plus an optional security question. Your Palm profile remembers your sync relationships with services like Gmail and Exchange (Outlook). It also keeps track of the apps you've downloaded, various settings like web browser bookmarks, and any items you've designated to be saved to your Palm profile. You can transfer that info to any future webOS phone you may own. During setup, enter your credentials to move into your new digs.

On a PC, visit palm.com/profile to change your Palm profile email address and password. You can also remotely erase everything on your phone if it wanders off.

Which email address did I use for my Palm profile?
Open the Backup app, and tap the upper left corner to open the application menu. Select "Palm profile," and enter your password to see the email address.

Uh oh. I forgot my password.
Don't panic. Enter an incorrect password three times. On the third attempt, the system will send a message to your Palm profile email address. Check your various email accounts for a message titled "How to reset your security information" from Palm_Inc@email.palmnewsletters.com (look in junk folders if your mail is filtered or spam-blocked).

By the way, some files are not backed up to your Palm profile: music, documents, photos, videos. Take the time occasionally to back these up to your PC. (Details: How to use USB Drive mode.) In fact, now that it's on your mind, why not do that right away?

It would be nice if I could access some details of my profile online, change a contact, look up a contact, remove a contact, add something to my calendar, etc. Sure, my Pre is almost always with me, but it'd be nice to have the repository of data it is at my fingertips elsewhere as well.

Unfortunately, you can't count on the profile to definitively restore your contacts, as my husband recently discovered. Palm would do well to offer a way to back up contacts onto one's PC to avoid losing years of accumulated contacts.

Sorry to hear about your husband's difficulties. We recommend keeping your contacts in a secure online location, such as Google Contacts. That way, if something happens to your phone or your computer (or both), you won't lose any information. If you need to sync your Palm webOS phone directly with a desktop computer, numerous third-party solutions are available. Here's a problem that has not yet (afaik) been corrected.

If you create the profile on the phone, it allows you to use an email address of the form "foo+bar@baz.com" for example palm+cool@gmail.com

This is a perfectly acceptable email address.

However, if you go to the Palm Profile web page, trying to log in using this email address will *FAIL* which means you are completely unable to access your profile off the phone.

Email Palm if you have this problem.

Now if you can only find a way to backup easily to a Mac.
Mark/Space has proved to be useless or worse.
Syncing with Google from my Pre and from Google to my MacBook created more problems than it solved
I've had to get an iPod to back up my calendar and contacts from my computer and vice versa, and carry the iPod along with my phone to keep that info with me.
I'm patient. Make the changes on a future version of Palm OS and/or on future Palm phones. But if you wait too long, I'll be virtually forced to move to an iPhone.

One question that has been bugging me for quite some time: Would it be possible to connect one Palm profile to two Palm phones at the same time, with both being turned on? I'd love to get a second Palm phone, but I'd like to avoid having two different profiles.

I would be extremely happy to be able to move my profile over to a new Palm phone. I am a day one Pre owner and have been eligible for e new phone since June. The Pre had been awesome, even better than that, but it is very difficult to keep waiting for a new Palm device.

Palm, Heres my only real complaint with webOS, how come if you delete a friend off you AIM buddy list, the changes are not reflected in your contacts...Unless you delete the account off Synergy, then re-login...Why cant it work like Facebook contacts?

And also "Messaging"-entries like SMS and MMS are NOT backuped. That's a great flaw in your backup-workflow i think.
